We’ve awarded TotalAV Essential Antivirus two stars because the other tools you get as part of the package are surprisingly decent, especially the VPN tool and duplicate file finder. Its on-demand scanning fared better, but was still not as good as most of the other antimalware apps we’ve reviewed. The important fact that TotalAV Essential Antivirus failed to catch all but two of the 26 malware samples is very disappointing. For example, while it found duplicate photos, it didn’t show previews of them, forcing us to open them in Finder to ensure they are actually identical. We then ran a full system scan to see if TotalAV Essential Antivirus would spot the many malware samples that now littered the hard disk. Then it failed to spot several more malware samples we unzipped, before it caught another-this time the Proton malware. We opted to have TotalAV Essential Antivirus delete it. TotalAV Essential Antivirus caught the MaMi malware. Nonetheless, we persisted in placing the final load of malware samples on the disk.Īnd then something actually quite shocking occurred. We unzipped the first malware sample from its password-protected archive and…. Unleashing our 26 malware samples on the virtualised testbed with TotalAV Essential Antivirus installed left us scratching our head. Yet TotalAV Essential Antivirus can be quit just like any other app. Many antimalware apps have special routines that ensure they can’t be quit, because quitting a malware app is an obvious attack vector for malware. If you right-click TotalAV Essential Antivirus’s icon in the Dock and select to quit, it will close TotalAV Essential Antivirus. The next thing we noticed was that TotalAV Essential Antivirus runs as a Dock app, which is to say, it doesn’t run in the background like all the other antimalware apps we’ve looked at that typically show nothing more than just a menu bar icon.
